While working with a client on a track she had a melodic line in the original piano version of the song that she really liked. However by the end of the construction of the track the vibe of the main melody no longer needed the original piano line so i got muted it from the track. She loved the vibe of the track but noticed the line she created was no longer there. She insisted that I put the line back in the track. I told her that the line is good but it isn't supporting the main melody any more. She insisted that the line be put back so I put the line back in using another sound to satisfy her need for the line. I did tell her that she may be getting in the way of what the song wants versus what she wants. Sometimes we get in the way of something really good cause our thoughts are what matters and not the natural development of the song. We finish the track and right as I'm starting the mix she calls and says "your right. The song has outgrown that line". It took a while but she got it. Our music will shine much more brighter if we let it do what it wants and not what we want. Sort of like raising kids. At some point let the kids make their own decisions.
